The Head of the Government, Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé, officially launched the national reforestation campaign on Saturday 1 June 2024 at the site of the General Gnassingbé Eyadéma camp in Lomé. She was flanked on the occasion by members of the government, members of the National Assembly, members of the diplomatic corps and partners.
The Prime Minister planted a seedling, setting the tone for the national reforestation campaign, in line with the Head of State, HEM Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé’s policy to plant a billion trees by 2030. The site will now become an urban forest in downtown Lomé.
The Head of the Government later travelled to Dzrekpo in the Vo prefecture. Alongside the local population, she planted seedlings at the construction site of the local youth centre. She seized the opportunity to raise awareness on the benefits of reforestation and the role trees play in an ecosystem. Finally, the Prime Minister returned to Akoumapé Nyita to visit the site where seedlings were planted three years ago as part of the 2021 campaign. The seedlings have now grown to form a large forest.
