On Wednesday 5 June 2024, Prime Minister Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé chaired a meeting in her office. The meeting, which was attended by ministers involved in flood management, made it possible to assess measures taken to address floodings caused by recent torrential rains in Greater Lomé.

The West African region has been experiencing relatively heavy downpours in recent weeks. In Togo, rains on 25 May 2024 caused water retention basins to overflow and floodings in some neighborhoods in Greater Lomé. To deal with the emergency situation, the Government took a series of measures, including activation of water pumping systems, offering emergency assistance to flood victims, and stepping up awarenessraising amongst the population living in flood-prone and low-lying areas.

“It is urgent for us to come to terms with the situation and avert further damage during the next rainy season. The Prime Minister gave instructions to strengthen the pumping systems in the basins, to carry out emergency work to ensure better drainage of water into the lagoon system, to take swift preparedness actions to implement existing solutions so to avoid and manage flooding effectively,” pointed out the Minister of State, Minister of Town Planning, Housing and Land Reform, Kodjo Adédzé.
