On Tuesday 28 January 2025, Prime Minister Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé received in her office Dr Hanan Morsy, special envoy of the Egyptian President. Dr Hanan, who is contesting for the position of Vice-Chairperson of the African Union Commission, carried a message from the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, to his Togolese counterpart, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.
After the audience, the Egyptian President’s envoy disclosed that he had conveyed a message to the Togolese Head of State, a move that reflects the strong ties of friendship and cooperation that unite Cairo and Lomé. She also took the opportunity to ask Togo to support her candidacy for the position of Vice-Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
According to Ms Hanan Morsy, Togo is a model of peace and stability, and its voice matters a great deal in the community of nations.
“I wish to take this opportunity to announce that I am standing for the position of Vice-Chairperson of the African Union Commission. Togo is known for its leadership on the continent,” added Dr Morsy.
The elections will take place in February 2025 during the African Union Summit. Eight (8) senior positions are now vacant at the AU Commission after the distribution of the regional portfolios: these include the positions of the Chairperson, the Vice-Chairperson and of six Commissioners. All of them will be appointed by the African Union.
Ms Hanan Morsy is an Egyptian economist and has been serving as Deputy Executive Secretary and Chief Economist with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, since January 2022.
