On Wednesday 17 January 2024, Prime Minister Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé chaired a working sessionin her office with the visiting Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi. Discussions focused oncooperation links between Beijing and Lomé.
According to Minister Christian Eninam Trimua, Permanent Secretary of the Government, “China is very interested in supporting the PURS program, notably on security in the north of our country. China also intends to support the President of the Republic’s efforts in ensuring security and building the capacities of all the defence and security forces, which have traditionally been cooperating with China for a very long time. And then, on the investment front, China is also interested in leveraging on Togo’s assets to invest in the West African sub-region, create jobs and facilitate the export of Togolese goods to China. Let me remind you that a recent decision by China grants over 98% customs duty exemption on Togolese goods bound for China. The move will go a long way in strengthening thelongstanding cooperation links with China.”
The head of the Togolese government, Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé, welcomed the visit, which testifies to the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.
The visit falls in line with China’s annual tour in key partner countries, including Togo. Prominent on the agenda was ways to strengthen China-Togo cooperation, which dates several decades back. The aim of today’s meeting was to take stock of cooperation relations between China and Togo, notably with respect to the nine priority programs outlined by the China-Africa Development Forum. Discussions also focused how Togo can leverage on these nine programs for the well-being of our people.
“It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Togo as part of your African tour. We are honoured
that you chose to visit Togo. Indeed, this testifies to the quality of the friendship and cooperation ties
between our two countries since diplomatic relations were established in 1972,” she recalled.
